Fiesta
Fiesta
Saint Peter is the patron saint of fishermen. The local fiesta is a blend of religion, sport and carnival that has been a tradition since the early 40s. It sports an event known as the Greasy Pole Contest, and yes men run out that pole covered in thick grease to capture the flag above very cold water to a comical routine fraught with injuries. There is certainly no shortage of machismo at these events. These images are layered. They document and reveal aspects of current societal values as well as the local tribal customs.
