Cape Pond Ice Co.
Cape Pond Ice is an essential industry for the port. The fishing fleet cannot survive without ice. This plant was built in the 40s and still operates essentially as it was. These men work hard in a tough environment, have multiple skill sets and the agility of athletes. One of the old guys is 80 and can still slide the 250 lb blocks to the crusher chute with the grace of a dancer, and out performs all the others when he visits. This is a document that speaks to the nature of such work and yet all work as well as the realities of our social economic system. We never see who makes the Ice, when we buy it at the grocery store, we never know what they did to make it happen, nor would we normally stop to consider it. Yet someone makes ice and bags it for us.
